Dear Colleagues, Friends, Community Members, and Students,

It is with a heavy heart and deep appreciation that I write this message in honor of our CIF Commissioner, Joe Heinz. In the past decade, no singular individual has had more impact on student athletes and high school athletics in San Diego than Joe. His passing comes as a shock to all of us and it is important that we acknowledge Joe’s legacy and the impact he made not only in athletics, but in our school communities.

The San Diego City Conference appreciates Joe for his service and thanks his family for allowing his years of dedication to the athletic world in support of our student athletes. Joe was a kind, supportive, hard-working man who cared about high schools, athletics, coaches and most importantly students. Joe always shared the best part of his job was going out to contests and watching the students participate in education-based athletics. He took pride in his work every single day and it was contagious.

His leadership and ability to navigate through challenges such as new facilities, budget reductions, expansion of sports, transfers, and most importantly COVID, goes beyond words. He always guided us with fairness, kindness, and grace.

The San Diego City Conference extends its sincerest condolences and deepest sympathy to his family, the CIF staff, and all the lives Joe touched over the years. The footprints that Joe has left in our communities will keep his legacy strong for years to come.

Sincerely,

Scott Giusti

San Diego City Conference President on behalf of the San Diego City Conference
